Two Africans are present in the list of 30 nominated for the Ballon d'Or 2018, including a new boy: Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian joins suddenly the Eto'o, Drogba and other Weah.
One, Sadio ManƩ , had already had the honor of appearing on the board of thirty nominated for the Ballon d'Or FF last year. He was finally 23rd. Will it be better this time? We will know at the end of the year. The other, Mohamed Salah , made his entry into the list of candidates for the prestigious trophy. He joins a list of 17 African players, including ManƩ, to have already known such a reward.
The first is George Weah, in 1995, when the Golden Ball opened its borders beyond Europe for any player playing in a European club. First appointment, therefore, and first success for the one who had worn this year the jerseys of PSG and Milan. The Liberian is currently the only African player to have raised the Ballon d'Or FF. Still present in 1996, he had to settle for twelfth place, just behind the Nigerian Nwankwo Kanu.
Drogba and Eto'o the most appointed of the continent
Two players from the African continent share the record number of presences among the nominees for the Ballon d'Or: Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba (8), far ahead of Yaya TourƩ (5) and the others. Aside from George Weah, the highest ranked so far is Drogba, fourth in 2007, a few months after finishing top scorer in the Premier League and second best Champions League winners with Chelsea. In the meantime better?
